SUMTER COUNTY MAGISTRATE COURT

DEPUTY CLERK - MAGISTRATE (FULL-TIME)

The Sumter County Magistrate Court is seeking a qualified applicants to fill the position of Deputy Clerk-Magistrate, full-time. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and education/experience. This position provides clerical and customer service support for court operations. 

  • Assists the general public in person and by telephone; provides information and assistance.
  • Maintains court files and records.
  • Reviews and processes statements of claims, dispossessories, foreclosures, writs of possession, abandoned motor vehicle affidavits, garnishments, and other civil action filings.
  • Processes F.I.F.A.’s.
  • Receives and processes consent judgments; enters default judgments.
  • Balances daily receipts; prepares deposits.
  • Prepares subpoenas for civil cases.
  • Processes daily mail.
  • Types and prepares a variety of documents and reports.
  • Performs related duties.

Minimum requirements, knowledge of Magistrate Court policies and procedures; knowledge of record management principles and practices; knowledge of computers and job-related software programs; skill in the use of modern office equipment; skill in the provision of customer services; skill in establishing priorities and organizing work; skill in problem solving; skill in interpersonal relations; skill in dealing with the public; skill in oral and written communication. Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with a Bachelors’ Degree in criminal justice or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position is required. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

CONSTABLE (FULL-TIME)

The Sumter County Magistrate Court is seeking a qualified applicants to fill the position of Constable. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and education/experience. This position is responsible for serving civil papers and other legal processes of the Magistrate Court. 

  • Receives and serves civil papers and other legal processes of the Magistrate Court.
  • Locates respondents, defendants, and recipients of civil papers and legal processes to ensure the proper delivery of court documents.
  • Serves civil suits, garnishments, eviction notices, foreclosures, writs, and other legal materials.
  • Oversees court-ordered evictions at the scene of the eviction to ensure the processes in conducted in a lawful manner.
  • Resubmits incorrect address papers to the plaintiffs.
  • Enters copies of served papers into record book and computer.
  • Attends Magistrate Court hearings/trials.
  • Prepares activity requests.
  • Completes required reports.
  • Performs related duties.

Minimum requirements, knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, county ordinances, and department policies and procedures; knowledge of the procedures and practices involved in receiving and issuing civil papers and other processes of the Magistrate Court; knowledge of plaintiff and defendant rights; knowledge of the geographical layout of the county; knowledge of the Magistrate Court system and judicial procedures; knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures; skill in serving civil papers and legal processes; skills in operating a computer; skills in public and interpersonal relations; skill in operating an automobile, firearm, and other standard and specialized equipment; skill in oral and written communication.  Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. SUMTER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

URBAN REDEVELOPMENT INTERN (PART-TIME)

The Sumter County Board of Commissioners is seeking an intern to prepare an Urban Redevelopment Plan which will be used to guide the implementation of an urban redevelopment project proposed for Rock Hill Subdivision. The Plan shall be in conformance, as prescribed by the Urban Redevelopment Law, with the Comprehensive Plan of Sumter County, and shall include activities selected for the purpose of eliminating existing and preventing future development of slums, or spread of slums, and may involve slum clearance and redevelopment of existing slum areas, rehabilitation or conservation, or any combination or parts thereof. The Plan shall encourage voluntary rehabilitation, and compel the repair and rehabilitation of deteriorated or deteriorating structures. The Plan shall indicate sites/areas of land acquisition, demolition and removal of structures, redevelopment, improvements, and rehabilitation of any activities that may be proposed to be implemented in the urban redevelopment area, including: (1) zoning and planning changes, if any; (2) land uses; (3) maximum densities; (4) building requirements; and (5) the Plan's relationship to definite local objectives respecting appropriate land uses, improved traffic, public transportation, public utilities, recreational and community facilities, and other public improvements.

The intern will serve under the direction of career county personnel and with others involved in local planning, community development and housing.

Qualifications

The intern should be a current college student or recent graduate, proficient in Microsoft Office, be computer literate, and have basic knowledge of office equipment. The ideal applicant will have completed at least some major coursework leading toward a four year degree in planning, housing management and policy, public administration or closely related fields.

SUMTER COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT

CERTIFIED FIREFIGHTER (PART-TIME)

The Sumter County Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Certified Firefighter part-time. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and education/experience. This position drives, operates, and maintains fire equipment and apparatus to mitigate fire and other emergency incidents. Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work; assumes command at emergency scenes until relieved by superior officer; directs emergency operations until relieved by a superior officer. Operates and participates in the maintenance of a variety of equipment, tools, and apparatus; troubleshoots and resolves problems. Maintains inventory of tools and equipment on apparatus; conducts daily inspection of apparatus; performs routine maintenance on vehicles, apparatus and equipment; reports mechanical failures when assistance or repair is warranted; performs minor repairs and may assist on major repairs. Maintains current knowledge of county roads, geography, and water system; tests fire hydrants. 

Minimum requirements, knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. This license is required to be upgraded to a Class F license within 90 days of hire date.  Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act. Be at least 18 years of age, not have been convicted of a felony in any jurisdiction within ten years prior to employment, have a good moral character as determined by investigation under procedure approved by Human Resources, be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record (Criminal background check).Proof of requirements must be provided at time of applying.

The Sumter County Correctional Institute is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Corporal. This position is responsible for serving as an assistant shift supervisor on an assigned shift. Major duties include but are not limited to; assuring adherence to department rules, regulation, policies, and procedures; monitors performance of assigned personnel.  Participates in and supervises the work of personnel engaged in guarding, monitoring, searching, and disciplining inmates in the absence of the shift supervisor.  Observes inmate conduct and behavior to prevent escape or disturbances. Guards and supervises inmate work details; inspects work for accuracy and completeness; dismisses problem inmates from work details. Inspects locks, window bars, doors, grills, and gates for tampering; conducts outdoor perimeter security checks (e.g., parking lots and vehicles).  Searches inmates and dorms for contraband articles.  Performs mandatory headcounts. Assists subordinate personnel with difficult or complex situations. May employ weapons or force to maintain discipline and order among inmates if necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Minimum qualifications include possession of high school diploma or its equivalent; one to three years experience as a Correctional Officer; possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the Sate of Georgia; must possess P.O.S.T. certification.

CONTROL ROOM OPERATOR (PART-TIME)

The Sumter County Correctional Institute is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Part Time Control Room Operator.  This position is responsible for operating a security and surveillance control room to monitor the county correctional institution’s security and safety measures inside and outside of the facility. Major duties include but are not limited to; operating security and surveillance system, observes TV monitors in control room to watch conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes; observes monitors to ensure the safety of institute staff members and visitors inside and outside of the facility.  Alerts correctional personnel of inmate unruly activities viewed on the control room monitors; dispatches correctional personnel to trouble spots and other facility locations as necessary. Operates control panel board to open, close, and lock prison doors; operates an intercom system to transmit and receive messages and to give orders to inmates inside the facility; maintains ongoing log of control room operation activities including records of incidences, inmate counts, visitors, key requests, etc.; answers telephone, transfers calls, answers questions, and takes messages; performs other related duties as assigned.
