SUMTER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

URBAN REDEVELOPMENT INTERN

The Sumter County Board of Commissioners is seeking an intern to prepare an Urban Redevelopment Plan which will be used to guide the implementation of an urban redevelopment project proposed for Rock Hill Subdivision. The Plan shall be in conformance, as prescribed by the Urban Redevelopment Law, with the Comprehensive Plan of Sumter County, and shall include activities selected for the purpose of eliminating existing and preventing future development of slums, or spread of slums, and may involve slum clearance and redevelopment of existing slum areas, rehabilitation or conservation, or any combination or parts thereof. The Plan shall encourage voluntary rehabilitation, and compel the repair and rehabilitation of deteriorated or deteriorating structures. The Plan shall indicate sites/areas of land acquisition, demolition and removal of structures, redevelopment, improvements, and rehabilitation of any activities that may be proposed to be implemented in the urban redevelopment area, including: (1) zoning and planning changes, if any; (2) land uses; (3) maximum densities; (4) building requirements; and (5) the Plan’s relationship to definite local objectives respecting appropriate land uses, improved traffic, public transportation, public utilities, recreational and community facilities, and other public improvements.

The intern will serve under the direction of career county personnel and with others involved in local planning, community development and housing.

Qualifications

The intern should be a current college student or recent graduate, proficient in Microsoft Office, be computer literate, and have basic knowledge of office equipment. The ideal applicant will have completed at least some major coursework leading toward a four year degree in planning, housing management and policy, public administration or closely related fields.

SUMTER COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT

CERTIFIED FIREFIGHTER (PART-TIME)

The Sumter County Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Certified Firefighter part-time. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and education/experience. This position drives, operates, and maintains fire equipment and apparatus to mitigate fire and other emergency incidents. Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work; assumes command at emergency scenes until relieved by superior officer; directs emergency operations until relieved by a superior officer. Operates and participates in the maintenance of a variety of equipment, tools, and apparatus; troubleshoots and resolves problems. Maintains inventory of tools and equipment on apparatus; conducts daily inspection of apparatus; performs routine maintenance on vehicles, apparatus and equipment; reports mechanical failures when assistance or repair is warranted; performs minor repairs and may assist on major repairs. Maintains current knowledge of county roads, geography, and water system; tests fire hydrants. 

Minimum requirements, knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. This license is required to be upgraded to a Class F license within 90 days of hire date.  Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act. Be at least 18 years of age, not have been convicted of a felony in any jurisdiction within ten years prior to employment, have a good moral character as determined by investigation under procedure approved by Human Resources, be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record (Criminal background check).Proof of requirements must be provided at time of applying.

CERTIFIED SHERIFF DEPUTY

The Sumter County Sheriff Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Certified Sheriff Deputy. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property.

Minimum Requirements include the ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Must be ALREADY Certified as a Peace Officer for the State of Georgia.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s licenses issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. WORK DETAIL SUPERVISOR

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Work Detail Supervisor. Salary is commensurate based on experience, qualifications and an equitable compensation and pay plan.Purpose of this position is to supervise county inmate crews and perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair and minor upkeep of the Sheriff’s Office and LEC. Duties include but are not limited to minor carpentry, plumbing, filter maintenance, light fixture maintenance and heating and air system maintenance. 

Minimum requirements include high school education or its equivalent. One to two years’ experience in building maintenance including facility maintenance, facility repair and heating and air systems. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver’s licenses issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Must pass P.O.S.T. Certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally within six months of employment.

CORRECTIONAL OFFICER (FULL-TIME)

The Sumter County Correctional Institute is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Correctional Officer. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to supervising inmates, observing inmates conduct and behavior, directing inmates during work assignments, patrolling the facility, and performing additional tasks as assigned.
